Zhengyi Hou
Harpsichord Technician
Zhengyi Hou is a harpsichordist, pianist, educator, musicologist, and early keyboard instrument builder from Shanghai, China. He earned his B.A. in music education and musicology from Shanghai Normal University, where he first developed an interest in early keyboard instruments. In 2017, he moved to the United States to further his studies. Originally trained as a pianist, Mr. Hou studied with Edward Auer (2015–2018) and Roberto Plano (2018–2021). He pursued harpsichord studies with Elisabeth Wright (2018–2021) and is currently completing a Doctorate in Harpsichord Performance at Stony Brook University under Arthur Haas. He also holds a Master of Music in Piano Performance and a Performer Diploma in Harpsichord Performance from Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music. As an instrument builder, Mr. Hou trained with renowned maker Richard Auber at Zuckermann Harpsichords International, where he is now resident harpsichordist, head of the action department, and builder at the Stonington Workshop. He previously served as early keyboard curator at the Jacobs School of Music (2019–2021). His maintenance clients include Carnegie Hall, the Flint Collection, Amherst Early Music Festival, Virginia Baroque Academy, and leading universities. Mr. Hou teaches at the Amherst Early Music Festival and Virginia Baroque Academy, offering harpsichord instruction and chamber ensemble coaching. His teaching experience also includes piano, choir, and ensemble direction, with a focus on nurturing advanced students’ expressive development and musical identity. His musicological work explores early European keyboard instruments in East Asia (15th–19th centuries).
